Simple, reliable catch reporting for your fishery, helping you log the right data quickly and keep your records in order without extra hassle.

To fish commercially in New Zealand, a number of regulations need to be followed which are set out by the Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI). Deckhand is an iPad-based electronic logbook, built to help meet the MPI reporting requirements (and do much more). Deckhand works offline, is updated frequently, and will meet the specific needs of your fishery.

Deckhand replaces the need for any paper forms or logbooks, and can be customised to meet the needs of your fishery.

Pricing

A single Deckhand licence is: $995 (+ GST and processing fees) per vessel/year (excludes the data cost through satellite transmission and cost of iPad).

If you are interested in using Deckhand, get in touch.

Requirements

Using Deckhand requires a few different pieces of equipment:

  • Fishserve Fisheries Management System (FMS) account: To collate the data from Deckhand and pass it on to MPI.

  • A cellular-enabled iPad with the appropriate charging system: To run the Deckhand Pro App.

  • Solar VMS - Pinpoint Earth: To collect GPS data at a level which satisfies the MPI reporting requirements.

Fishserve will assist in the initial setup of your Fishserve Fisheries Management System (FMS) client number which is required for your Deckhand logbook.

Additional offerings

Dragonfly Data Science supports Deckhand as an application, and we are also able to help you use the fishery information from the Deckhand application to enhance your understanding of your fishery.

We have worked with several fisheries across New Zealand to provide them with increased visibility about what is happening in their area, to help them strategically plan their voyages. Helping them avoid bycatch, optimise their catch per unit effort and reduce fuel usage. All while either integrating into existing systems like Deckhand, or helping them move away from paper-logging into electronic forms like Deckhand.

For more information about what we could do for you, see our page about Right Time, Right Place.

More about Deckhand

Deckhand is an application built and maintained by Real Time Data (RTD). They provide Deckhand to fisheries across the globe in many different countries to meet required and sometimes voluntary reporting requirements.

Dragonfly Data Science is responsible for the New Zealand Deckhand customers—we believe it is important for you to be supported by someone who knows the context and environment of New Zealand’s reporting requirements. And we here at Dragonfly have a history of working with local fishers and managers, with local expertise in the data, allowing New Zealand to fulfill its fishing potential.
