Fisheries and oceans

Dragonfly provides independent fisheries science across Aotearoa New Zealand and internationally. We bring scientific expertise, data, modelling and practical tools together to support healthy oceans and sustainable fisheries.

For this generation and the next

Fisheries support food, jobs, coastal communities and ways of life. They also depend on healthy oceans and resilient marine ecosystems.

Good management starts with understanding what is happening beneath the surface. Dragonfly works with governments, international organisations, industry and others across fisheries to build that understanding.

Our independent science helps people with different interests understand what is happening and make decisions about the future of fisheries and the ocean.

Creating sustainable and productive fisheries starts with good science

Good fisheries science combines scientific expertise, reliable information and methods people can understand and trust. We use fisheries science, population dynamics and statistical modelling to understand how marine populations are changing and why.

Good data and infrastructure make that science possible. Our scientists, statisticians, engineers and designers work across the whole process, from databases and data preparation through modelling and analysis to reproducible reports, forecasts and practical tools.

What we do

Data and infrastructure

Data and infrastructure

We build and support the databases, research infrastructure and reporting systems that bring fisheries information together and keep it reliable over time.

Prepare and connect

Prepare and connect

We bring together catch, effort, survey, environmental and spatial information, checking and preparing it for scientific analysis.

Analyse and model

Analyse and model

We use population dynamics, statistical models and fisheries science to understand how marine populations are distributed, changing and responding over time.

Tools for the water or the office

We create reports, visualisations, forecasts and practical tools that help people use the science

Fisheries are dynamic, our work changes with them

Fish populations move. Ocean conditions shift. Climate change is reshaping marine ecosystems. New catch and survey information arrives. Rules, markets and management priorities move too.

Many of the people we work with need more than a one-off answer. They need information about their fishery that can be updated annually, monthly, weekly, daily or in real time.

Dragonfly can keep the data, methods, models, code and tools connected over time. This makes the science transparent and reproducible, so it can be checked, updated and used again as new information comes in.

For questions that need to be answered again and again, we can manage the whole scientific process as an ongoing service, providing independent science that stays current and repeatable.

Our role at SPC involves carrying out stock assessments on tuna, sharks and billfish, in order to provide management advice to the WCPFC. The team at Dragonfly have worked with us for eight or nine years, specifically focused on shark assessments. They have worked really hard to not just deliver the assessments but to develop and improve the methods. We’ve really appreciated the added value they have brought to every assessment.

It's amazing to not only sit at the table with data science experts like the Dragonfly team, but also to see their proficiency in delivering comprehensive assessments that incorporate new approaches and include uncertainties in such a statistically robust way.

Sharks are vital to the health of marine ecosystems, and alongside our focus on tuna stock, we are committed to developing more robust approaches to assessing shark stocks to provide better management advice.

Dragonfly have been instrumental in helping us and the WCPFC to not only better understand the shark stocks, but also to assess whether the management measures are effective in the way they are intended to be.
